Spark Central Data Centre – Christchurch Central

Smardt Chiller Installation – 2019/2020

After Spark had lost all confidence in the initial tender winner for this project (anther local mechanical firm), Piersons was entrusted by Spark to carry out the extremely high-risk installation of 2x 940kW Smardt chillers at the Christchurch Central Data Centre. The two new Smardt chillers were to replace the Carrier Screw Chillers which had serviced the building for the past 25-years.

The nature and high importance of this building to Sparks data infrastructure meant that the installation had to coincide with the running of the building. Meaning full cooling redundancy for the critical internal equipment had to be maintained throughout the installation and commissioning of the new Smardt chillers, and the decommissioning and removal of the redundant Carrier chillers.
This posed a serious and unique set of challenges right from the project planning stages through to execution.

Demonstrating an intricate and detailed knowledge of the requirements, equipment, project and the engineering challenges, Piersons managed all risks and saw the entire installation through without a hitch, delivering the client an immaculate and functional finished product.

The project highlighted Piersons ability over the rest of the industry with regard to high risk and complex installations.
